Lesson 3

Plan Conversations with Questions & "Ir + Infinitive"

Push past basic introductions by asking when, where, and why things happen. Combine those question words with the near future structure ir + infinitive to talk about plans like a native.

Core Question Words

Color-code your memory: English cue → Portuguese response.

Where Onde

Use with "em" or movement verbs.

When Quando

Great for schedules or events.

Why Por que

Space between words when asking.

With whom Com quem

Keep the preposition before the word.

How long Quanto tempo

Use to ask about duration.

Ir + Infinitive in Action

Conjugate ir (vou, vai, vamos, vão) and keep the next verb in its base form. Use it to describe plans, invitations, or upcoming goals.

Eu Eu vou estudar português hoje à noite.

Você Você vai viajar para o Brasil?

A gente A gente vai praticar amanhã cedo.

Eles Eles vão falar com o professor depois.

Mini Dialogues

Listen, shadow, and then swap in your own details.

Planning study time

Você:

Where are you going to study today? Você vai estudar onde hoje?

Eu:

I am going to study at the library with Ana. Eu vou estudar na biblioteca com a Ana.

Weekend plans

Eles:

When are they going to travel? Eles vão viajar quando?

Nós:

They are going to travel on Saturday morning. Eles vão viajar no sábado de manhã.

Pattern Practice

Say each pattern aloud, then personalize it.

Pattern: Question word + ir + infinitive

Example: Quando você vai viajar?

Pattern: Ir + infinitive + companion

Example: Eu vou praticar com meus amigos.

Try It Yourself

Fill the blanks with the correct infinitive or question word.

Onde você vai ____ hoje?

Where are you going today?

Use infinitive after "vai": "vai estudar".

Remember: ir + infinitive, so keep the base form.

Eles vão ____ para o Rio amanhã.

They are going to travel to Rio tomorrow.

"Vão viajar" keeps the infinitive travel verb.

Only the infinitive fits after "vão".

____ vocês vão praticar?

When are you all going to practice?

Use "Quando" to ask about time.

Match the meaning: we need the question word for time.

Com quem você vai ____?

Who are you going to talk with?

Again, ir + infinitive → "vai falar".

Keep verbs in the infinitive after "vai".
